The tour guide

The first time I went scuba diving was in Dahab in the Sinai peninsula, many moons ago. It was still a tiny Bedouin fishing village then, with no electricity or running water.

I still remember the sensation of seeing the drop-off for the first time. The vibrant colours, shapes and textures of the coral, and the vivid array of fish flitting in all directions.

It was like swimming through a magical underwater garden. Behind my mask, my eyes were wide with wonder.

Working as a public speaking coach, I often say our role as presenters is to guide our audience. To take them on a journey from one place to another.

To a destination where they feel they have moved forward in some way.

We have a choice. We can walk them through a faceless industrial estate.

Or we can take them on a magical mystery tour of colour and surprises.

I wonder, which would you prefer?
