A sense of welcome

One of my first communications roles was in Paris, working for an international trade association in the hospitality sector.

Our members were hotels of all shapes and sizes around the world, and we organised events in beautiful venues from Mexico to Manila, Seville to Sydney.

I loved discovering new and exciting places.

But I also learned a lot from observing the teams at the host hotels.

The care. The attention to detail.

The sense of service.

The way they treated each guest as a VIP – whether someone was staying in a suite or just popping in for a coffee.

Now, years later, I often think about that when I coach people to speak.

Because every time we give a presentation, lead a meeting, or speak in public… we’re hosting.

As acclaimed US restaurateur Will Guidara says:

“We all can make the choice to be in the hospitality industry regardless of what we do for a living.”

At the end of the day, we’re offering something of ourselves.

Creating a space where people feel welcome.

Inviting others in – not to impress, but to connect.

Asking questions, and listening with care to the response.

That’s what confident communication really is.

Not showy. But generous.

I wonder… What helps you create a sense of welcome when *you* speak?
