One step at a time
At an online workshop I led recently, I told participants that I always feel nervous before speaking in public.
And I’m a public speaking coach!
As an introvert, speaking in front of a large audience pushes me out of my comfort zone.
And I’ve learned to embrace that discomfort. I do it because I know the ideas I share can help others grow in courage and confidence.
I was pondering this on my dog walk this morning.
Each day, I climb these 122 uneven steps.
Some are long and steady, others are short and steep, and I have to watch my footing, keep my balance, and regulate my breathing.
But no matter how tricky the steps are, I know I’ll reach the top.
Public speaking is not about eliminating the nerves – it’s about showing up and taking the next step.
The more we practice, the more we grow. With every step we take, we move from hesitation and nerves, to greater confidence.
From 'ho-hum' or 'yikes!'... to ‘wow!’
Like the view from the top of these stairs. It’s worth the climb to see mountains and sea and wide-open skies.
And it’s worth it every time we challenge ourselves to speak up, share our ideas, and step beyond our comfort zones.
So, if you’re feeling nervous about speaking – in a meeting, on stage, or even on a video call, remember... it’s completely normal.
And as long as you keep climbing, one step at a time… you’re doing just fine.
