Words You Could Eat

Some words feel so vivid, you could almost taste them.

They carry stories, places, and people inside them — like tiny time capsules of memory and meaning.

These are the words that connect us to who we are, and how we express ourselves.

I’ve been collecting them for years. Words that make me smile, spark a memory, or roll beautifully off the tongue.

What about you?
Is there a word you’d add to the list?

This page began as a game with my daughter, Eva — a shared love of words that taste good when you say them.

It was also inspired by The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris — a beautiful book that brings back nature words dropped from the Oxford Junior Dictionary for lack of use.

It made me realise how our own “lost words” — the ones we stop using or sharing — can distance us from parts of ourselves.

This is my way of bringing some of them back.

A few of the disappeared nature words (marked with *) appear here too — to help keep their magic alive.

I’d love to know what words you could eat, and add them to this list.

If you’d like to contribute, click below to tell me your word, and why you could eat it. I’ll add it to the list, along with your first name and where you are in the world.

Let’s make this a space to share and revere our favourite words. And help ensure they stay found forever.
