“What do you want to be…
“What do you want to be before you grow up?”
“A children’s TV presenter!”
When I was a kid, I was a huge fan of the BBC TV show ‘Why Don’t You….?’, short for ‘Why Don’t You Switch Off Your Television Set And Go And Do Something Less Boring Instead’.
It was shown during the school holidays – and packed with ideas for things to do.
The entire team of presenters were kids, and I yearned to be one of them.
I was up for trying out all the creative projects they suggested, especially the cooking.
Perched on stools at the kitchen counter, my sous-chef little brother and I set up our ingredients, utensils and recipe book.
In front of us, a Rice Krispies box, standing in as a camera.
Over the holidays, we showed our imaginary audience how to make a variety of bakes: chocolate chip cookies, coconut pyramids, cupcakes...
Carefully explaining each step.
“Heat the oven at gas mark 3 – don’t forget to ask an adult to help!”
During those cooking classes, I stepped into my role of TV presenter with great gusto, serious about my responsibility to educate… and also revelling in the funny moments.
Sometimes we experimented with silly voices, to the delight (we were sure) of our fictitious audience the other side of the cereal packet.
I still remember those cooking sessions today. Having the freedom of the kitchen to...
🌱 Be in front of an “audience” to create a space for learning, practicing and developing skills
💫 Successfully model possibilities for other people
⚡ Transform ingredients into something bigger and richer
🙌 Give words of encouragement - we were all in this together
🚀 Use my passion, creativity and know-how to help others succeed.
This is the essence of what I do today as a leader and communications coach.
Yes, I’ve happily found my very own version of “Why Don’t You…?”
